Topical Authority

Topical authority is the depth and consistency of a site's coverage on a specific subject, signaling expertise across an entire topic rather than a single page.
Detailed Explanation

Sites that thoroughly cover a topic through interconnected glossary terms, guides, and articles build stronger topical authority than sites with a single isolated page, since the breadth and internal linking reinforce credibility.

Breadth alone is not enough, though. Forty thin pages on a subject signal volume, not expertise — and to a search system they can look like an attempt to game coverage rather than provide it. Authority comes from depth on the pages that matter most, connected by links that make the relationships between them obvious.

Why It Matters

Topical authority is one of the clearest paths to being recognized — and cited — as the go-to source on a subject, both by traditional search engines and AI systems.

Example

A site with a full glossary, several in-depth guides, and comparison pages all covering AEO builds far more topical authority on the subject than a single blog post ever could.
