Backlink

A backlink is a link from another website pointing to yours, treated by search engines as a signal of trust and relevance.
Detailed Explanation

Not all backlinks carry equal weight — links from credible, topically relevant sites generally count for more than links from low-quality or unrelated ones. Backlinks remain a core ranking factor in traditional SEO.

For AI visibility the relationship is indirect. A model assembling an answer does not count your links; it reads pages that mention you. A backlink helps mainly because it usually comes attached to a mention on a page a model might read — which is why an unlinked mention in a well-regarded roundup can be worth more than a link from a directory nobody cites.

Why It Matters

While AI visibility depends more on citations than links, a strong backlink profile still supports the traditional SEO foundation that AI systems partly draw on to judge a site's credibility.

Example

An industry publication links to a company's research report, passing along some of its own authority and signaling to search engines that the report is a credible source.
