AEO

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI-powered answer engines can find, understand, and cite it directly in their responses.
Detailed Explanation

For twenty years the goal of content was a position on a results page. AEO changes the target entirely: the win is being named inside the answer itself, where there is no list of ten options and usually no second place.

The work has two halves. The editorial half is structural — answering the question in the first sentence, keeping one idea per section, and writing definitions that still make sense when a model lifts them out of context. The technical half is about machine access: structured data such as FAQPage, DefinedTerm and Organization, HTML that does not hide its content behind JavaScript, and consistent naming so a model can tell that every page is describing the same entity.

What AEO is not is keyword density or word count. Answer engines do not rank pages; they assemble responses from passages. A focused 300-word page that answers one question cleanly will often outperform a 3,000-word guide that buries the same answer in section four.

AEO also does not replace SEO — it depends on it. A page that cannot be crawled or indexed cannot be cited either.

Why It Matters

When someone asks an assistant which tool to use, they typically see three or four names and stop reading. There is no page two. If your brand is not in that handful, the buyer never learns you exist — and you will not see it in your analytics, because there was no click to lose. AEO decides whether you are in the room when the shortlist gets written.

Example

A SaaS company rewrites its pricing page so each plan's limits are stated in plain sentences instead of a graphic table, then adds FAQPage schema to the questions below it. Six weeks later ChatGPT begins quoting those sentences almost word for word when users ask what tools in that category cost. Nothing about the product or the pricing changed — only whether a model could read the answer and attribute it with confidence.
