GEO

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing content specifically for generative AI models that synthesize original answers rather than list links.
Detailed Explanation

GEO focuses on the generative models that compose new text from many sources at once, rather than surfacing a single best page. The output a user reads is a paragraph nobody actually wrote — assembled on the spot from fragments of dozens of pages.

It is worth being honest about the boundary: most practitioners use AEO and GEO interchangeably, and the industry has not settled the distinction. The useful difference is one of emphasis. AEO asks whether your content can be extracted and cited. GEO asks whether your brand is represented accurately when a model paraphrases rather than quotes.

In practice GEO work is mostly about consistency and entity clarity. If your homepage, your pricing page and your LinkedIn profile describe the company three different ways, a model blending all three produces something vague and hedged. Saying the same thing in the same words everywhere gives it one clear signal to work from. Third-party sources that corroborate that description do the rest.

The risk GEO addresses is one AEO does not: a model can name your brand and still describe it wrongly.

Why It Matters

Being mentioned is only half the outcome. A generative model can name your brand and still put it in the wrong category, attach a competitor's feature to it, or quote a price you have never charged. GEO is what turns a mention into an accurate one — and a confidently wrong description delivered to a buyer can cost more than no mention at all.

Example

A company calls itself an "AI visibility platform" on its homepage, an "SEO tool" on its pricing page, and a "marketing analytics suite" on LinkedIn. Asked what the company does, Gemini returns a vague sentence that fits none of the three. After the descriptions are aligned to a single phrase, the same question returns a clean, accurate summary. No new content was published — the existing wording was simply made consistent.
