Citation Rate

Citation Rate is the percentage of analyzed AI answers in which a brand is actually mentioned.
Detailed Explanation

Citation rate is the number of analyzed answers that mention your brand, divided by the total analyzed. It converts a vague sense of presence into a percentage you can track.

Its usefulness depends entirely on the denominator staying fixed. Run the same questions every month and the number is a trend. Change the questions between runs and it becomes noise dressed as data — which is the most common way this metric gets misused.

It is also worth reading by segment rather than in aggregate. A 30% overall rate can hide the case that matters: full presence on brand queries, where people already know your name, and near-zero on problem queries, where new buyers actually start. The headline number looks healthy while the part that generates demand is empty.

Why It Matters

Citation rate is the simplest number for showing whether AEO work is producing more mentions over time. Read as one figure it flatters you; read by query type it tells you whether you are winning the audience that already knows you, or the one you are trying to reach.

Example

A brand is mentioned in 24 of 80 answers, a 30% citation rate. Split by intent, 19 of those 24 come from brand queries. On the 40 problem and category questions — the ones asked by people who have never heard of the company — it appears five times. The aggregate said moderate success; the breakdown said almost none.
